Sack Back Chair

Handcraft an American Classic

Do Something Extraordinary!

Have you always wanted to create a fine piece of furniture using hand tools?
Learn to build a Sack Back Arm Chair (as shown at
right) in our workshop in a week.

This class is oriented to the novice, as well as the
experienced woodworker. With personalized attention, we will help you bring out your creative abilities.

Using the fine techniques employed by early craftsmen, Ferris Rugar-award winning Hudson Valley artisan, will guide you through handcrafting your own sack back arm chair.

Class will begin by shaping the spindles, arm and bow, using a drawknife and spoke shave.  You will steam bend the arm and bow and set to dry.

The pine seat will be shaped using a variety of traditional tools including the Adz, Scorp, and Travisher.  Holes will be drilled with a Bit Brace and Spoon bits.   You will also learn how to use a Tapered Reamer.

The undercarriage (maple legs and stretchers) will already be turned for you, as assembly will take a bit of time.

At the end of the class you will have a completely assembled and painted chair to bring home.
