F & M Windsor Chairmakers

To own a Windsor chair from Ferris and Maureen Rugar is to have an original work of art. Every chair is handcrafted, one at a time, and has its own individual character.

The chairs start from a red oak log, a rough cut plank of pine and maple. Using antique and reproduction tools, the wood is shaped using the same methods that were used 200 years ago. Once the chairs are assembled, they are painted using authentic milk paints, which further enhances the character of the chair.

Ferris and Maureen started building Windsor chairs in the early part of 2000. They both enrolled in the Windsor Institute in Hampton, New Hampshire, where they became the first husband and wife team to be inducted in the "Royal Order" - which is the honor society for Windsor chairmakers. In the summer of 2003, they completed their studies at the Institute; Maureen becoming the first woman to graduate and also return to help teach a class of fledgling chairmakers.

Continually studying the designs and proportions of antique Windsors, Ferris and Maureen have also built some 19th century style chairs, including the Boston Rocker and a Nanny's Bench.

You can find Ferris and Maureen creating their "heirlooms of the future" at their workshop in LaGrangeville, New York.
